On June 1, 2023, we celebrated the release of the first Mixtape from Mission 1477, our statewide storytelling initiative. Nearly 50 attendees gathered at Green Spaces for a night of poetry, storytelling, and inspiration, marking a milestone in YEBO’s efforts to foster community and self-expression through the arts.
The Release Party wasn’t just a celebration—it was an embodiment of YEBO’s commitment to strengthening community connections through public arts events. These gatherings provide a platform for BIPOC youth to authentically share their stories, offering diverse perspectives that foster empathy and cultural understanding. Through the theme “Bloom,” we invited our community to dress in their most vibrant florals, symbolizing YEBO’s growth and renewal.
Hosted by the dynamic Kerrie Joy, the evening showcased the talents of BIPOC youth, including live performances and an engaging discussion with storytellers Alejandra Vasquez and Maricarmen Crisostomo. Both shared how their involvement with YEBO had influenced their vision for the future, highlighting the transformative power of storytelling.
We also honored Colorado Public Radio’s Audio Innovations Team with the “Community Award” for their vital role in helping our team build essential production skills. The night concluded with a lively story from Mixtape contributor Adolfo Cruz, whose humor and warmth left the audience inspired.
This Release Party was a testament to our pillar of fostering Cultural Enrichment by celebrating diverse narratives and empowering BIPOC youth to share their voices. Through events like this, YEBO continues to create spaces where storytelling not only builds empathy and understanding but also strengthens the bonds within our community. We look forward to future gatherings where more stories will bloom and bring our vision of a more inclusive, connected society to life.
