The inner child is what we’re all itching to release. In this finale, Jadyn realizes that we all have a deep desire to bring alive our inner child. The hero’s journey is your journey.
Why do you do what you do?
At the end of the Last Airbender, we find Avatar Aang peacefully passing time with all the characters who helped [him] to defeat the Firelord.
Remember, Aang was only 12 years old when he was informed that he was the Avatar 4 years before he was supposed to be told. As a result, he ran away, was frozen for 100 years, and was awakened to fulfill his initial responsibility.
All of the work, all of the preparation, could be summed up in the last episode where he gets to experience tranquility with those he loves, Aang is feeling harmonious – he’s a full kid again.
I used to dream of being able to go to McDonald’s whenever I wanted. Ordering a large fries without having to ask my parents. Passing by a McDonald’s and not questioning whether or not I’d get my hands on the newest Happy Meal toy.
While I know that my inner kid will never escape from me. The whole reason I’m shooting for the stars is that I believe fate has brought my family together (here on Earth) so my Why: Is being able to live and be my full self. I live with this philosophy because it allows me to be my best and help those around me.
Remember how we discussed the role your villain plays in your life, and how more often than not your worst villain is yourself?.. Well, what if the hero that could save you was your inner child?
My Chief Plug thought it’d be interesting to hear the perspective of an elementary-aged kid about what they think the Superhero Mindset is.
So, I interviewed my 8 year old sister: Ariyah!
“If you take a break, think of your presents (the present). A Superhero Mindset is, practically to not give up – ‘what does it mean to be me’? – umm. Probably to just keep trying and if you have a goal you can get there it just takes some time”.
Every day is a new day. Every new day is an opportunity to try again.
The reality is we will have those bad days. Days that’ll make us want to quit and start something new.
We’re all seeking new ways to evolve into a better version of ourselves. I still remember in 5th grade, the feeling of thinking about what life might be like after graduating high school – the thought of not being trapped in school anymore!
Like Alejandro, you want to start something that will serve your community.
Like Nick, your worst villain might just be yourself (and please don’t beat yourself up for it).
Like Dr. Janiece Mackey, your superpowers have given you the ability to create the world of your dreams (grounded in love and equity).
Like Xavier, your League looks like your close family members who root for you day in and day out.
While you may believe you’re only ordinary. What makes you extra-ordinary is the corollary of the actions and behaviors you commit to.
Do it for your 8-year old self, Like Ariyah, who knows that if anything goes wrong you can always go back to sleep and try again the next day. Keep dreaming!
“Umm well. Maybe sometimes you just have something on your mind. And if you go to sleep you could probably forget it, but you can just start off as a new day. And have new plans. Cause if we didn’t wake up today, we wouldn’t be doing this right now”.
Before we go, if you ever start to feel anxious about the future. I want you to take a step back: [take a breath]
What you have is right now – in front of you.
What did Aang do after he defeated the Firelord? What did Luke and the Rebellion do after they brought down the Empire? They celebrated, rejoiced, and soaked everything in during the moment.
When all is said and done: The reality is that when you achieve great things, you’ll need to counterbalance that by taking a break, and that looks like meditating. Superheroes like yourself don’t need to go hard every single day.
All you need to do is keep being the fullest version of yourself.
The closest thing we have to Superheroes here on Earth are people who are rooted in themselves. People like you! The hero’s journey is your journey 🙂
